Build confidence – prepare for the PSAT
Most students take the PSAT cold. It’s just a practice test, right? The schools don’t see the score, right? Yes and yes, but it is also the first real indication of how a student may fare in the SAT battle to come. The student will care about the score. A disappointing score will sting, and it can derail confidence for taking the “real” SAT. The SAT campaign will surely go better if the student starts with a 50 or 100 point higher PSAT score!
Unfortunately, underperforming on the PSAT is almost to be expected. The test, which is identical to the SAT except for being slightly shorter, is difficult.
There will be question types the student has never before seen.
Nearly all students have trouble getting through some of the reading passages.
The English section requires knowledge of some unfamiliar grammar and punctuation rules (after having helped hundreds of kids with SAT prep, I have not had a single one who knew the “semicolon rules” going in).
The math sections are structured in an unusual way that fools every student (hint: do some of the questions out of order).
Many math questions in effect have an extra step that many students miss even though they completely understand the underlying math.
And more!
Even just a modest amount of preparation can make a difference. At the very least, go to the College Board website and download and complete one of the PSAT practice tests. Or take our PSAT Prep Live Online class:
